That's short for Mother of the Year, in case you don't know the lingo. I am always striving for the MOTY award, and this weekend I went the extra mile.
Halle and I were lying in my bed watching Awakenings with Robin Williams on Saturday. Have you seen that show? It's an amazing movie based on a true story that will have you running a gauntlet of emotions. I love it. And Halle was intrigued as well.
I noticed as the movie progressed, that there were a lot of make-up commercials. You know, where they say "I'm so beautiful and rich....you should be too." And I thought to myself, "I should say something." So I did. And it went like this:
Me: Halle, do you know what I am noticing? There are a lot of commercials that are all about how important it is to be pretty. To have pretty clothes, make-up and hair. They make it seem like that's the most important thing for women to be. And guess what? I know that's not true. ( I may have gotten a little teary eyed here, teaching such truths to my sweet 9 year old.) What do you think the most important things are? (I felt a thrill and a tingle anticipating her response.)
Halle: Um..............being friendly?
Yes. Friendly was exactly what I was going for.
I have touched on this point numerous times before. I also know that Halle's level of comprehension is ridiculously high. So, I suppose the lesson to be taken from this is: I don't talk about this enough, AND I have not achieved MOTY status yet.
